American Idol – Season 6 – Top 10 Girls

Posted by: heath In: American Idol| Music| Television

American IdolThat’s right America…it’s time for your Top 10 girls to perform on American Idol…this….is hopefully the night that Antonella Barba gets voted off.

Antonella Barba attempting to singAs you can see from my introduction, I’m not a fan of the girl. Besides the naughty pictures online, which are possibly not hers (can you say, best friend who wants her own 15 minutes of fame and probably leaked the pictures herself), she CAN NOT SING! Please get her off the show…NOW! Ok…now that’s out of the way and we can move on.

Here’s tonight’s recap.

Once again we’re in dedication week, and unlike the gays guys, nearly every girl cried giving her dedication…unfortunately, no witty comments from Simon to lighten the mood this time around.

Gina Glocksen kicked the night off with “Alone” dedicated to her hot boyfriend Joe (who had died part of his hair red to match Gina’s). Basically she tried to rock it, but the background singers were annoying and she was pretty pitchy on the big notes. Simon wants her to be more edgy, especially with her clothing choices to match the song. Personally, I didn’t like it, but she’s not leaving just yet.

the Dixie ChicksAlaina Alexander was up next with a dedication to mom. It was a Dixie Chicks song, “Not ready to make nice“. Frankly, it was awful. I could barely hear her voice, she doesn’t have a country look, she was pitchy on the parts that I could hear, and even the judges agreed that basically she lost it midway through the song. You always know bad news is coming when they talk more about how the contestant looks than about their singing. She’s possibly out.

LaKisha Jones gave a shout out to grandma with “Midnight Train to Georgia“. I have mixed feelings. I loved the version Paris did last season, but I also liked the arrangement of this one. Her voice was wonderful as always, but Simon hated her outfit. At the end, she almost looked unhappy to be there…wonder what was going on. She going to stick around for a long time.

Funny ValentineMelinda Doolittle gave the star performance of the evening with “My Funny Valentine” dedicated to her “two Gails”. It was absolutely amazing. I LOVED her tailored suit look, and her vocals were simply wonderful. She’s got a beautiful tone in her voice, hit all the HOT power notes, and the judges were all over it. Quite possibly, she and LaKisha will be battling it out at the end of the season…she’s Top 5 material for sure.

And then things went down hill…because Antonella Barba tried to sing Celine. I knew it was all over when Ryan previewed that she was going to be doing a Celine song, in fact I screamed “oh my god” into my living room. What the hell was she wearing, and what the hell was she thinking with that song? I don’t care that she dedicated it to her brother Vincento, or however the hell you spell something that was pronounced “Vinchenzo”. “Because You Loved Me” was completely butchered tonight. It was awful, terrible, painful, worse than last week, and her attempt to dig Simon about him getting rid of Jennifer Hudson backfired when Simon reminded her that America voted Jennifer off, not him. Let’s hope America does the same to Antonella tonight.

Disney song bookOn to Jordin Sparks with a dedication to her brother PJ. I think she was singing a Disney song…”When will my reflection show who I am inside“…what movie is that from? Never heard that before, and frankly I’m not a huge fan of Disney soundtracks, but she kicked it out there. (Of course it wasn’t a Disney song, it was Christina Aguilera’s “Reflection“) For a 17 year old, the judges were incredibly impressed. She’s not leaving any time soon.

Stephanie Edwards kicked it up a notch with “Dangerously in love with you“, dedicated to mom and dad who had to drag her to the auditions because she didn’t really want to go. Odd song, and she seemed off from the music the entire time, but the vocals were spot on. Simon thought it was terrific, and it was. She’s around to stay.

Leslie Hunt is probably out this week, along with Antonella, after a very poor “Feeling Good” dedicated to her late grandfather (anyone remember that AJ Tabaldo sand the same thing?). Personally, I loved the soft beginning, but once she got into the song, it went down hill fast. I hated 80% of it, especially the scatting. Very forgettable, and what was with that massive ear-disc she was wearing? Sorry…not Top 6 quality.

Queen of the NightHaley Scarnato was the big surprise of the evening, and not in a good way. She dedicated “Queen of the Night” to her mega-hot fiance Bobby, but unfortunately, she was nowhere near being a queen tonight. I’m thinking more like a hand-maiden or someone who cleans the spittoons. It was awful…pitchy all over the place, and almost embarassing to watch. Simon told her it was manic verging on insane, and as Ryan talked on stage, you could tell that Haley was doing everything she could to hold back bursting into tears. Sorry honey, terrible song choice.

Sabrina Sloan wrapped up the night for us with a dedication of “All the Man I Need” to her grandmother. Tell me please, who is Sabrina Sloan and have we seen her on the show before? I had to go back to last week’s blog just to see if I’d actually written about her. I couldn’t remember her to save my life. Good vocals, some excellent power notes…she’s around to stay as well.

Frankly, I think most of the white girls are out at this point. My prediction is that the top 6 will be made up of 5 black women and 1 white one, with Gina being the remaining white girl left. None of the others have the power voices to remain in the competition. Tomorrow night we have the elimination round, and a guest appearance from Miss Pickler herself. Can’t wait.

A couple of notes:

You actually had it right on both counts. Christina Aguilera sang “Reflections” for the Disney movie “Mulan” (and included it on her first CD.

As for what Antonella was wearing, in a desperate bid to look matronly and virginal, she mugged Carol Brady in the parking lot and stole her entire wardrobe. If she survives this round, she’ll be singing, “It’s A Sunshine Day” next week.

I would like to see LaKisha try “When a Man Loves a Woman” and also “When You Wish Upon a Star.” (It’s a Disney song but I think LaKisha could really own it.
Also would like to see Stephanie try “Summertime” in an arrangement somewhere between Lena Horne and Janis Joplin, with maybe a pass at “As Time Goes By.”
