American Idol – Season 6 – Top 12 Girls

AI Top 12 GirlsUnlike last night, the girls gave an all around good show tonight. I was pretty impressed with several of them, and so were the judges. So let’s get this party started!

Stephanie Edwards started off the show. I’m not sure who she is because she’s not gotten much screen time so far. She’s got the look of Fantasia, and she picked a soulful song but had a shaky voice and wasn’t really hitting it at first. The song was “How come you don’t call me any more“, and it didn’t get going until the chorus when she finally found her groove. She finished this song HOT! Simon told her it was a million times better than the guys. But it’s unfortunate she sang first, because by the end of the show, I’d forgotten her.

Amy Krebs, the optometrist assistant was up next. Breathy voice doing a Bonnie Rait song, “I can’t make you love me“…boring, pitchy, and she tried to hide the pitch problems with runs all over the place. I felt like it was a diarhea commercial with all those runs. Simon hit it right on when he told her he didn’t feel like she was capable of standing out.

Leslie Hunt the dog walker was next, and is it just me, or is she a “quirky alone chick” ? “Natural Woman” was pitchy, and her dancing was ghetto. The voice has a raw quality, but Simon was right when he told her she was way out of her comfort zone. I’m not feeling it with her.

Sabrina Sloan was next with a good gospel-y song, with notes that showed off her range. Unfortunately, I couldn’t understand many of the words, so I assume the song was “I never loved a man the way I love You“, but who can say. At the end, she surprised me – the audience was on their feet and it was HOT! Sometimes you can save a song with the big notes.

Antonella Barba was up next. I will say right off the bat that I do not like her. I thought she was a completely rude and obnoxious competitor in the Hollywood round, and I hope she gets kicked off right away (but the fact that she’s got naughty pics online will probably keep her for a while). Thankfully, the singing wasn’t there either, so I might get my wish. It was a ballad “I Don’t wanna miss a thing” and it was pitchy all over the place. She couldn’t hit most of her notes, and the ending was atrocious. Paula pulled out the “you look good card” – and when she says that, you know she hated the song but won’t say it. Simon thinks she’s out, and I hope he’s right.

Tracy ChapmanJordin Sparks, our spunky 17 year old was up next with “Give Me One Reason“, and excellent Tracy Chapman song. Very good vocals and she hit the ending hard. The judges loved it, but I worry that her age will not let her get too far.

Nicole Tranquillo was another one we haven’t seen much of so far. The octave was way too low for the start of the song. Was she singing “Stay Together” ? Who knows, but Simon didn’t think it was a genuine performance, and I agree.

Haley Scarnato chose Celine’s “It’s all coming back to me now“. Just like Stevie Wonder, if you can’t nail the song, don’t even think about singing it. It was pitchy, rough, and I didn’t like it at all. Her voice shook, she hit the big note but it was flat. Simon told her that she sounded like she was 40.

Melinda Doolittle, the background singer was up next with “Since You’ve Been Gone“. She was outstanding. She’s got an Aretha look to her, and frankly I love her speaking voice. This performance was hot from start to finish, and my second favourite performance of the night.

Alaina Alexander gave us “Brass in Pocket”, but I could barely understand the worlds. The high notes were pitchy and harsh, and her voice sounded hoarse. Simon told her she was going to have to rely on her looks to make it through the first round. Harsh perhaps, but probably true.

Gina Glocksen. First off, I want to say she looked hot. I absolutely loved the look. Unfortunately, she chose Celine’s “All By Myself“. It was boring, and while I thought she hit the power note, Simon said not so much. Her speaking voice sounds like the mom from Malcolm in the Middle – anyone else catch that?

Jennifer HolidayLaKisha Jones was last, and boy was she a show stopper. She absolutely nailed Jennifer Holiday’s “And I am Telling You“. (and she sort of has that Jennifer Holiday / Aretha look to her as well) It’s one of my favourite songs, and she was absolutely incredible. Simon basically predicted that she would win, by telling the other 23 contestants to book their tickets home. I thinks she’s got the potential to go all the way to the top. My absolute favourite of the night.

I think who should have went out yesterday was Antonella Barba Leslie Hunt and for the boys Sanjay and Bradon

  • heath: Oh Tommy...your comments mirror those of the Dawg as well. They thought Lee's voice was too big for the song. I don't think it was too big, but I can
  • Tommy Marx: Gotta disagree with you on this one sweetie. Yes, Crystal and Siobhan were definitely the best of the women, and while I didn't like the song he sang,
  • heath: Glad we're on the same page regarding Lee ;-). Otherwise, I'm really bored this year. I was hoping that we'd have another big personality like Adam L
