American Idol - Season 6 - Top 11 sing the British Invasion
Posted by: heath in American Idol, Music, Television
Ok folks, let’s jump right in. We’re doing songs from the British Invasion (the 60’s), and what is up with Sanjaya’s shirt-gloves? Gina looks hot coming out in all black leather, and Melinda’s new hair…I’ll get to that in a minute.
Oh look, Randy, Paula, and Simon have new Coca-Cola glasses! How pretty. But the big opener was Ryan asking Paula for her advice to the contestants on how they can shake off the nerves. She said by picturing Simon not dressed. I’m sure we’ve all done it, but we’re never going to do it again after that, so let’s move on.
Peter Noone and Lulu were the celebrity vocal guests for the show, and they coached the contestants through their rehearsals. Love the Brits.
Haley Scarnato - “Tell Him” - Tell him to come pick you up from the theatre on Wednesday night is more like it. Pitchy, and she sounded out of breath as she was singing, possibly because of all the running around. It was better than she has done in the past, that’s for sure, but not enough for the Top 5 or so. Randy must be deaf because he loved it. Simon said that people will talk more about something other than her singing…my vote is the massive earrings that looked like huge gold platters. When they did the recap at the end I’d completely forgotten she sang this song.
Chris Richardson - “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” - Chris started off by telling us his goal was to “finally nail a song”, and that he did. I loved the intimacy of the guitar player, but there were so many runs I was a bit distracted. The song was boring because I detest ballads, but he sang it well, and I loved the sexy ending. Here’s the problem, his vocals never change. He is always in that same higher pitch, and although it pains me to say it, he’s not as versatile as the others when it comes to range.
Stephanie Edwards - “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” - Very hesitant at first, and pitchy throughout. David walked out of his room asking “who is bastardizing that song?” Simon told her that she’s losing her edge. I was a bit disappointed because she’s much better than this. Fan question for her: what is the hardest part about getting ready each week. Her answer: picking the song. Maybe she just didn’t pick the right song this week.
Blake Lewis - “Time of the Season” - Pitchy parts, and more beatboxing. I’m getting tired of the beat boxing, frankly, though I think most of America seems to love it. Swanky dancing, don’t know what to say about that…Idol 2007 probably loved it
(actually he didn’t). He seems arrogant when he sings, and again, looked unhappy. The best part for me was Ryan coming up for the post-sing interview, and he started beat boxing with Blake, then said “I spit when I do it.” Oh Ryan…TMI. This combined with the constant hits for Blake Lewis Gay, is just too much for me to take tonight. It’s been a traumatic last few days.
LaKisha Jones - “Diamonds Are Forever” - She was pondering singing “You’re My World”, and Lulu would have preferred that, but she went for the glam. She was apparently wearing $1 million in diamonds tonight, and I loved it. I love the song, I love the look. Randy didn’t like it, Simon thought it looked like what she would be in 50 years. She thought that if she looked and sang that good 45 years from now, she’d be happy. I would be too. Rock on LaKisha.
Phil Stacey - “Tobacco Road” - I hate his head. I know it’s not nice of me to be so judgemental about intentional baldness, but, I hate it. Why did he pick up the mic stand? That’s a deal breaker for me right away. He’s not Bo Bice. Stop screaming into the mic, you aren’t Daughtrey. Was his shirt dirty or was that sweat leaking through? If so, always wear an undershirt, we don’t need to see that. Didn’t like it at all, though Paula thought it showed some different vocal ranges for him. Simon summed it up with “you may have a problem tomorrow.” Oh and Phil, never ask the audience if they had fun. They lie.
Jordin Sparks - “I Who Have Nothing” - I love that, when she got feedback from Lulu, she said “that was so empowering and I don’t even have a boyfriend.” How cute is that. Here’s another song from Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Brilliant. She’s in the final for sure. Fan question for Jordin: Name a song that describes you best. Her answer: “I’m So Excited” by the Pointer Sisters.
Sanjaya Malakar - “You Really Got Me” - He couldn’t decide between this one and “Into Something Good.” He should have picked neither. This was completely unbelievable. I wanted to just say “WTF” and leave it at that, but I couldn’t. It’s no coincidence that they kept showing that girl in the audience absolutely balling with tears. Simon hit it on the head: “I think the little girl’s face said it all.” Sanjaya then went and gave her a little hug. I threw up in my mouth just a little bit.
Gina Glocksen - “Paint It Black” - She reminds me a bit of Pink, but in Black. Great arrangement and she had a lot of fun with the song. I want her to paint me black some time. I loved it loved it loved it. Randy, however, though it was pitchy, but then we got to see Gina’s hot boyfriend in the audience and I forgot what Randy said. Simon however, demolished her. He said it was torture and off melody. This hurts me. Fan question for Gina: Do you think being on AI has made you stronger. Her answer: Yes. But after Simon’s comments, stronger doesn’t even begin.
Chris Sligh - “She’s Not There” - Good vocals, but I did not like the walking through the audience or the song itself. I agree with Idol 2007’s frequent comments that Chris needs to stick with Christian Contemporary, and frankly, a lot of his fans back home think the same. Fro Patro? Hell no.
Melinda Doolittle - “As Long As He Needs Me” - This one is from Oliver. I don’t like her hair, or the outfit, but as always, her voice is exquisite. More shots of the little girl in tears, but we know this time it’s from joy. What a way to finish the show…I think she’s going to win this competition. All Simon could ask is whether she’s really that nice in real life. Nice.
Time for the recap. Tell me I’m wrong, but I don’t remember hearing or seeing the same thing in the recap as I saw in the main show, but I wasn’t going to ba-boop Tivo back that far to check.
Crying girl came up on stage as Ryan wrapped the show, and got to hug all of the contestants, Blake first. I’m sure Idol 2007 was jealous :-). G’nite!

Omigod, I can’t believe I forgot to mention Sanjaya’s sweater-gloves! My feeling is, you can shout/sing a bad version of the Kinks, you can look like a Breck girl, you can even make prepubescent children cry, but without the sweater-gloves, it means nothing at all!

Really, you like Gina? I tried to be into her but it’s not happening. I thought she was awful last night.
I totally agree about Phil’s head 100%. The eyebrows make it even worse.
I love Melinda and it seems all of us AI bloggers (those of us over 15 anyway) seem to agree that she’s going to win. Even though I adore her, I think I’d like it if she had a couple of bad weeks just to make things interesting again….
Anyway, thanks for the laugh- I loved this blog!

Yeah, mostly because Gina is hot :-). Love the hair, love the black leather, love the hot boyfriend…maybe it’s the boyfriend.
No, seriously, I like that there is a rocker chick on the show this year.
