American Idol – Season 6 – Top 3 sing 3
Posted by: heath In: American Idol| Music| Television
We’re down to the final three and tonight the three sing three. That’s three songs. One chosen by a judge, one chosen by the producers, and one chosen by themselves. Hopefully they bring it tonight and make it to the Kodak Theatre next week for the finale.
Jordin Sparks is up first, and she’s home in Glendale, AZ when the fax from Simon arrives, letting her know that she has to sing “Wishing on a Star”. She performs and Randy/Paula love it, but Simon doesn’t approve of the arrangement. Ryan chides him a bit about him picking the song, but Simon reminds him that he did NOT pick the arrangement.
Blake Lewis is next up in Washington state, and he gets a fax from Paula letting him know the song choice is “Roxanne”, one of the most boring songs of ever. I don’t approve of this song choice because there is no way that Blake can compare to Sting. And he didn’t. I don’t want him in the finale. That was awful, and did anyone notice how he “accidentally” flipped the mic into the audience? Randy liked it a lot, Paula of course loved it, Simon thought it was good but not great.
Melinda Doolittle was in the mayor’s office in TN when she received word from Randy that she would be singing “I Believe in You and Me”. Why did she call him Randy Johnson? I said to David just now, “if anyone can sing it Melinda can.” And of course, I was right. Randy loved it, Paula loved it, Simon loved it.
Now it’s time for the producer’s choice songs.
Jordin answers a viewer question: “What is your favourite song of all time?” Answer: “Mmmmm Bop” by Hansen. “She Works Hard for the Money” is the choice of the producer’s, and I think it’s a great choice for Jordin, who has often reminded us of a young Donna Summer. This wasn’t my favourite performance from Jordin, but it was solid. The judges liked it, but Simon had some arrangement concerns and couldn’t stop laughing at a joke Paula made.
Blake answers a viewer question: “If they were to make a movie about your life, what would the title be and who would play you?” Answer: Jim Carrey, Organized Chaos. Producer’s choice, “This Love” by Maroon 5. I’m not familiar with this song, and after Blake’s performance I won’t be downloading this one from iTunes. Awful, terrible, useless. Randy loved it, Paula loved it, Simon liked it better than the first song.
Melinda answers a viewer question: “Who was your idol growing up and why?” Answer: “My mommy…that’s my girl and one of my closest friends.” Producers chose “Nutbush City Limits”. I LOVE this song! Melinda even looked like Tina Turner during this performance. She did her grandparents proud – they were in the audience tonight. The arrangement of the song was rather wierd, but I loved the performance. Go Melinda! Randy loved it, Paula loved it, Simon loved it.
Now we’re moving to the contestants favourite songs from the season to wrap up the show.
Jordin has, of course, chosen “I Who Have Nothing”, which was probably her best performance on the show. She kicked this off at the mall she used to work in and the “star” that they had embedded into the floor at the bottom of the escalators. Jordin thought it was great that people could “walk all over her now”. Go Jordin
. I got chills listening to this performance. She deserves to be in the finale after that one. Randy loved it, Paula loved it, Simon was disappointed that she sang a song that was so old.
Blake is doing “When I Get You Alone”, but first we have to see him jamming with Sir Mix-a-Lot back home. Um…wahoo. I did love the violin intro, but that’s where my love ended. I don’t want to see Blake in the finale. He can go off and make his beat box album, but I will not be purchasing it. Sorry to say I fast forwarded to the end of this one, only to discover that Randy only thought it was “a’ight”, Paula loved it of course, Simon really liked it.
Melinda wraps up the show with “I’m a Woman”. Two songs tonight from Smokey Joe’s! But first, a street named after her in TN! What a lucky woman! I love this song, and I love Melinda. Tragedy struck at the beginning though when she flubbed up some of the words – she covered it well and it didn’t seem to impair the rest of her performance. I especially liked the scantilly clad backup singers joining her on stage. But I’m concerned about the mistake at the beginning. Randy loved it, Paula loved it, Simon wants her in the finale because of her week-after-week consistency.
Tomorrow we discover who we’ll see in the Kodak Theatre!
