NWN2 | Homo sarcasmus - the official blog of Heath L. Buckmaster

This is the game that I’ve been playing all weekend…

and oh…how much fun am I having? lots….lots and lots.

I’m a huge fan of the first Neverwinter Nights, which was an incredible campaign of RPG fun. I finished the original campaign, and purchased the two major expansion packs, Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark. Both of them were equally engaging, and I finished SoU but I could not complete HotU. I got to the last major fight in the game and simply couldn’t be the bad guys.

So…I decided that my adventures would continue in NWN2 instead. Perhaps some day I will go back and resurrect my old character and play through the campaigns again, but it’s unlikely.

As a wise and learned man once said: We can go back…to the past…we have to move forward.

Indeed.

Is this game any good? Does it live up to the original’s standards?

Tom - NWN 1 was pretty amazing in my opinion. The storyline was engaging, and I actually felt like I could succeed without using any sort of cheats. I even went back to replay some of the story with different character types just to see what the different was.

In NWN2, it seems like the “choose your own adventure” style has really been improved. Based on the type of dialogue you have with characters or your fight party, the game actually changes. You can lose or gain influence with your peers just based on how you act and what you say, and that ca have significant impact on how they will interact with you in the future.

Another cool new thing is that you can craft your own weapons and armor. You gather the supplies, throw them on a work bench, and if you have the right skill, you can make pretty much everything you want, including magical devices. That’s a neat addition, though honestly, i’d rather loot some gold and buy what I need vs. taking the time to carry around metal fragments and sword moulds…but oh well.
