American Idol 2008 - Top 9 | Homo sarcasmus - the official blog of Heath L. Buckmaster

American IdolHello America - we’ve reached the Top 9. These are still the people that you will see on the American Idol’s Tour this coming summer, so I hope you voted well…personally, I still won’t be going to the show.

Theme: Dolly Parton week -love me some Dolly Parton!!! Oh and it was also Paula was drunk night.

  1. Michael Johns - “It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right“. Um, no. Hated the yelling, didn’t like the ascot, tired of him. Even the accent doesn’t keep me interested any more. Very poor song choice for his voice, and he did a disservice to it. Whiny performance. I’m over him. I fail to understand how the judges can just sing his praises after such a crap performance.
  2. David Cook - “Little Sparrow“. He looks like he coloured his hair - it looks very interesting. This was his own arrangement of the song, which I really enjoyed. However, I did not enjoy the audience clapping in the background. Shut up people. And stop waving your freaking hands. Excellent song, excellent arrangement, excellent vocals. (Incidentally, David was taken to the hospital after the show with heart palpitations)
  3. David Archuleta - “Smokey Mountain Memories“. Incredible. Amazing voice. Not my favourite song, but he’s just superb. Not a single pitch problem anywhere. Loved it.
  4. Jason Castro - “Travellin’ Thru“. Weak vocals at the beginning, could barely hear what he was singing. Middle of the song was better for me for him. I still hate the hair but like the face. Very pitchy in spots, but in general pretty good performance and I like the song except for the religious elements.
  5. Kristy Lee Cook - “Coat Of Many Colors“. I was so tempted to fast forward through her performance, but I really like the song. Did not like it at all. The fake country accent, ridiculous. Completely disrespectful to Dolly. Boo. Boo.
  6. Brooke White - “Jolene“. Great song choice, one of my favourites of Dolly’s. Boring and completely forgettable performance. She sang it just fine, only a few pitchy spots for me, but singing a slow song as the show opener will never get you remembered by the end of the night. Seemed like the song was over in 30 seconds as well…which makes it even more forgettable. To quote Paula: “You are Brooke White.”
  7. Ramiele Malubay - “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind“. She looked completely uncomfortable singing the song. It almost looked like she was trying to remember the words as she was singing them. She’s definitely NOT a country singer, and the little schoolgirl outfit did nothing for me. Pitchy in spots, boring, forgettable.
  8. Syesha Mercado - “I Will Always Love You“. Everyone will compare this to Whitney Houston, and everyone will say that Syesha was boring and forgettable. Personally, I love both the Dolly and the Whitney versions, but I do not like the Syesha version. I don’t like her sitting on the piano, don’t like the hair, don’t like the arrangement, don’t like anything about it, however, I will give her props for the power note at the end.
  9. Carly Smithson - “Here You Come Again“. I love this song, and I think finally Carly chose a song that shows off the tone of her voice. She’s not a slow music singer, but I enjoyed completely.

Results: Ramiele Malubay is OUT. Was it irony that her mic went out during the group sing of 9 to 5? I think perhaps so.

If you want more details, here they are…

Bottom 3: Kristy Lee Cook, Ramiele Malubay, Brooke White

The Clark Brothers gave us This Little Light Of Mine. I’m really not sure how you can take a song like that and make it rock-and-roll. Oh wait, you can’t. Simply ridiculous. I think this deserves the WTF??? And that guitar picking…um ok talent-wise that was cool, but picking that song was absolutely ridiculous and stupid and lame and ghastly, and offensive. I sang that song in vacation bible school people. *sigh*

And another WTF - what was up with the Idol’s commercial? Stupid. Useless.

Dolly Parton looked fantastic. I did NOT, however, like the song.

You could totally tell Dolly’s age in her voice when she performed. I’m a huge fan and loved the lyrics to the song but only liked it because it was Dolly. Hell girl… I have to like her.. I was raised right next to the Smokey Mountains. Tragic.
