Making History

Posted by: heath In: GLBT| Politics

The big news for our country and the world is of course that Barack Obama has won the presidential election. I would imagine that Europe and Asia are enjoying a collective sign of relief. I think it was one of the most inspirational speeches I’ve ever heard in my life. Simply amazing.

The big news for California is that Proposition 8 to write discrimination into our constitution has likely passed (based on the current election estimatesif this somehow changes I’ll update this). This has a huge and hateful impact on GLBT residents of California who want full equality as intended by our founding fathers. Unfortunately, some people in this country just don’t get it.

What an evening. I was glued to Anderson Cooper (and CNN) for most of the night…the election coverage was pretty good, with a heck of a lot of commentary from both sides of the political system. It’s probably the first time in a long time that I was actually interested an excited about the election – and as I mentioned before, this is a world changing event.

I’m curious to see where it goes from here…

I’m floored by the Prop 8 outcome. I refuse to attend anymore weddings, or say the pledge of allegiance until their is finally liberty and justice for all.

Enough is enough. I cried as I stood in the crowd supporting the march supporting illegal immigrants. I have stood against racism and proudly embraced everyone regardless of skin color or any such nonsense, and I have always been proud that I never let something as stupid as prejudice determine who I let into my life. Screw that. If hispanics overwhelmingly think that I shouldn’t be allowed to marry, that’s their right. It’s also my right to think that they shouldn’t be allowed in this country. From now on, I’m voting Republican and I’m supporting any candidate that supports English as the only language and will get rid of all illegal aliens. Obama can kiss my ass – from now on, I’m marching with the KKK. You want to shove a fictional god that hates gay people down my throat, then I’ll do the same. I’m no longer a democrat. I’m no longer a liberal. I’m a pissed off faggot who from this day on will be actively campaigning against any and all minorities. I finally understand why so many gay people hate straight people. The fuckers hate us. And now I’m gonna do everything possible to make sure that hate is returned. They never let me vote on their right to marry. But I will vote against everything they ever want.

There has certainly been a lot of anger here in California. I know a lot of folks who marched on the capital, and a number have been picketing LDS churches across the state and elsewhere.

I really am not sure what some of the anger is going to do…I think it’s a natural reaction – I was certainly livid as I watched the numbers rolling in…the irony of people in other states having control over laws in my state bothers me…the irony of a church who has long been subjected to discrimination over their past now lumps that discrimination on another minority.

I marveled at the news reports that said that while black and latino voters were great for Obama, they were bad for GLBT rights. Again, the discrimination just trickles down to the next minority. One takes a step forward and another takes a step back.

The encouraging thing is that the younger generation seems to be less tolerant of intolerance – and at some point they will be in the voting majority and perhaps things will change. Who knows what will happen with a new president – he’s the first one who has actually mentioned “gay” in his acceptance speech.

I’m going to take a wait and see approach, and hope for good things to come.
