Hollywood Schmollywood

Posted by: heath In: American Idol| Television

American IdolAfter a very exciting Superbowl Weekend (despite lackluster commercials) I was really hoping for an equally exciting American Idol Hollywood Week.

I was disappointed.

Tuesday night offered us the first round of HW auditions, where only a small number of contestants were cut. I really can’t say which were cut and which stayed because the format of the show was so frantic I’m really not sure we got to see more than 5 or 6 people sing.

In groups of eight they took the stage, sang a bit, then were immediately told whether they were staying or not. While they auditioned, the other half of the group was out and about in Hollywood taking in the sites. Makes you wonder whether the people who auditioned first and didn’t make it still got the tour of the city or whether they immediately flew home. I’d be bitter and wouldn’t want to walk around town with the people who got to stay.

Wednesday night gave us group sing. This is usually when the high drama happens on American Idol. People who really don’t want to be group singers get smooshed together with equally independent vocalists, forced to choreograph a song (for a SINGING competition), then perform after staying up all night rehearsing.

Forget a lyric, off you go – although in past seasons the judges have been more lenient….not this year. Although again I can’t really tell you for sure who made it through and who was out. For the first 30 minutes of the 1 hour show it was drama after drama with exactly ZERO auditions. Those didn’t start until I was already fed up with the show and about to hit fast forward.

Finally we heard maybe….3 or 4 groups, and the rest flew by in montages of good and bad singers. I think the Osmond boy is out, and I know that my favourite Emily Hughes is out because she completely forgot her words. Otherwise, I’m going to have to wait until next week to figure out who is left.

AntonellaThis new format isn’t working for me, and I’m not digging Kara as the fourth judge. I just don’t see what value she’s bringing to the show…so far it hasn’t been much other than the sing-off with bikini girl (who is thankfully out after doing a Vogue pose on stage, and who makes me wish for Antonella Barba again) during the audition phase.

Really not feeling it this year. I’m sad.

This is often one of the most obnoxious episodes for me every season. Let’s hope it picks up and you get the enjoyment back soon . . . I’ve been looking forward to AI filtered by Heath, and I don’t want it to dry up yet!

I have to say it’s not getting any better is it? Hollywood week was so boring, terrible editing, hardly any singing.
Reveal of the top 36 was equally lackluster, and I don’t like the singoff, especially between people who are friends. That’s just glorified ratings.
