This week the “kids” were on the big stage! And what a set it is. Flat panel monitors all over the place, even up in the rafters so the stage hands can watch the performances (because the audience certainly can’t see them)…what a huge display of wealth…ridiculous.
Actually, I like the set, but seriously, monitors on the sides of columns that no one can see? Besides, why look at a screen when you can stare directly at the performer who is desperately trying to do a Michael Jackson cover without completely butchering the King of Pop?
I’m a huge fan of Michael Jackson’s music. There’s really not much better than Thriller, and I have written about it extensively in the past.
But on to AI Top 13, 12, 11.
OUT THIS WEEK: Jasmine Murray, Jorge Nunez.
This was a surprise to me, especially after what I thought of as very good and solid performances. Jasmine did have some pitch problems, but she is incredibly marketable. Jorge did a wonderful job, has a great voice, took some risks by changing the song arrangement, and overall I was very disappointed that he was in the bottom two. Maybe there aren’t enough people in Puerto Rico who called in to support one of their own. I wish he was still around.
Michael Jackson songs are always difficult, just like those from Stevie Wonder, but for the most part the contestants gave it their all – especially Adam Lambert who came out as the best of the night in my opinion. He was another one who got the first week “you’re going to the finals” message. I’m hoping he makes it there instead of Danny Gokey, only because I don’t like the big flaunted cross hanging around his neck.
Another surprise this week was the announcement of the Judges “Save”. Which is basically a useless marketing stunt. If all four judges agree then they can save someone from elimination for the week, but the following week two people will get eliminated. They can only use the elimination once, and it has to be done before they reach the final 5.
Seriously? That is more complicated than just letting America vote. It’s not going to change the outcome, it’s just going to delay someone getting kicked off for another week. Does America really change its mind that fast? I don’t think they do.
Anyway…that’s the wrap for this week – we’re down to the Top 11. Enjoy your time in the mansion while you can “kids” because most of you aren’t going to be there much longer.
To sum up my feelings on Idol Season 8 so far….. meh.
