American Idol 2009 – Finale

From billions of auditions we have made it to the Top 2 America!!!!

YEAH!!!!!

Ok, I’m not seriously jumping up and down after the finale show, and let me tell you why. Here’s the run down of the night…

The contestants each sang three songs: their choice from the season, producer Simon Fuller’s choice (who should be barred from ever choosing songs again), and the Idol single which this year was co-written by Kara (who should be barred from ever writing an AI song again).

Kris won the coin toss and chose to go second in the performance sequence, so Adam took the stage and chose the song I hoped he would choose – Mad World. I adored his performance the first time, and I loved it again the second time. The second time was admittedly much more theatrical with the big black coat and the fog, but who cares? Adam has earned the right to be as theatrical as he wants. Amazing vocal control; stellar performance.

Kris stepped up to the piano for his choice of the season, Ain’t No Sunshine. The performance was tender, powerful, elegant, and shows off his smooth and endearing vocals. Simon gave the first round to Kris, but I gave it to Adam because I liked the theatrical bit and the coat.

Next up Adam took on the challenege of Change Is Gonna Come. I hated the song choice (thanks Simon), but Adam put a huge pile of emotion, flamboyance, and power vocals into the performance. The judges went nuts over it and it was well deserved.

Kris took on What’s Goin’ On and was very comfortable behind the guitar as he did a basically safe performance. I didn’t like the song choice (again, thanks Simon), and I think in terms of really grabbing the audience’s attention, this didn’t do it. Kris might be in trouble just for forgettability factor on this.

Next up both contestants attempted to tackle the Idol single, No Boundaries. I would like to say that I hate…HATE this song. Why oh why do they have to create a song that absolutely demolishes the end of the show like this? It happens every year – a song that is a complete mis-match to the contestant’s style and vocals. Neither of them nailed it, and that hurts me.

This is the song on the album that you will never, ever listen to again. Adam had great pants on, Kris was pitchy – so much so that the judges barely even commented on his performance but instead chose to tell him how much he deserved to be on that stage.

I’m going to call it for Adam at this point, but I will also repeat what I said before. I think that if Adam wins, Kris will have a harder time being a success than Adam would if Kris wins. I think Kris needs the engine of Idol more than Adam does.

We shall see what happens…

RESULTS: After an action packed 2.5 hour results show, we have a new American Idol – Kris Allen!! Great job to him! He and Adam will both be stars and they both deserve every good thing that comes next. Very happy with this season, even though I was originally unhappy with the audition process. So there you go! Now it’s time for So You Think You Can Dance!!

Adam: His original version of “Mad World” was better. When he first sang this, I literally started to weep. This time, I enjoyed it thoroughly, but the element of surprise was gone.

Kris: His version of “Ain’t No Sunshine” was better tonight than his first performance. In the first line, when he waits to sing/whisper “gone,” I was captivated. I wish he didn’t look so weird when he sings (what is it with the lips that stretch into weird shapes?), but I loved his performance.

Initially, I would give Kris the win on this one, but the truth is, most fans will recall the first time they heard the contestants sing their songs, and while Kris did a really nice job originally, Adam’s original performance was breathtaking and heartbreaking. So in the end, I think Adam wins the round. Barely.

Adam: His performance of “Change Is Gonna Come” didn’t completely demolish the song, but as a huge fan of that particular tune, I have to say that there were more than a couple of times that I had absolutely no idea what Adam was saying. It came across as Shrieky McShrieky when Adam could have easily made it transcendent. I didn’t care for it much.

Kris: Huh? I didn’t understand his choice of phrasing, his decision to make a powerful protest song into a coffee shop open-mike performance, or his seemingly oblivious understanding of what the song was saying. And can someone please explain to me why, if this is a search for the next pop star, the producer picked songs that were 40+ years old?

I give this round to Adam, because even if I didn’t care for his version, at least he imbued it with emotion. Kris came across as the guy who can play the guitar and sing and (most importantly) is super cute, so you don’t really care if he’s not that great.

Adam: No Boundaries. Kara needs to be killed.

Kris: No Boundaries. Kara needs to be tortured for several months before being killed.

Adam sounded better singing about mountains and hurricanes (Kris brought up painful memories of when they forced Blake to sing the inspirational song that was so bad, they didn’t even release Jordin Sparks version as a single), but in the end, I have to agree with my best friend, Susan. If I never hear that song again, I still fear I might take two pairs of scissors and shove them in my ears to try to destroy the memory of having heard the song twice.

My prediction? Either Adam or Kris is going to win.

And personally, I think both of them are going to have a successful future. :-)

You make it sound like Kris is desperate to win the AI. Who makes it a point to come out with all the gimmicks (dry ice, long coat, etc.) and the screeching, and screaming, just to get noticed? Adam.

Kris has always relied on how he can interpret and deliver a song, it’s always been from the heart. He excels in singing songs that he chose, because he knows who he is and trusts that it will help him get to where he is right now. I’ve downloaded several of his performances (MP3) and I’ve played it over and over, and fall-in-love everytime.

I think what other artists have said about Kris will show just how talented and promising an artist he is; Jamie Foxx was swooning on him in Ellen and repeated his desire to do a duet with Kris, Quentin Tarantino called Kris “my guy”, David Archuleta in an interview (while in Singapore) praised Kris for his voice, attitude, style and for being well-grounded, Chris Daughtry twitters for Kris Allen votes, Melinda Doolittle (in her blog) has repeatedly taken Kris’ side and promotes him as well. These are the ones that are on the internet, except for David where I saw the actual interview on TV.

Will Kris have a career after AI win or lose? He will and it will be BIG TIME.

Berns,
I don’t think he is desperate to win, I just think that he needs the marketing engine of AI more than Adam does in order to be a huge breakthrough success. I compare it to Chris Daughtry and someone like Jordin Sparks. I don’t think she’s really had the breakthrough success (like Carrie Underwood perhaps), and I don’t think anyone would get her stuff if it weren’t for the AI engine behind her.

Daughtry however, didn’t need AI to be a hit – other than the visibility perhaps.

I don’t have all the answers – but I do like BOTH of the finalists individually. I have also downloaded songs from both of them and look forward to their albums.

Couldn’t agree more about the “idol song”. I don’t know why they put the contestants through that miserable torture every year. I’m never going to listen to that song again and hope it gets ridiculed in the industry ;-) .

I agree that Kris needs to win AI to be successful. Adam will be successful no matter what. He is this season’s Chris Daughtry. If Kris doesn’t win he will no doubt release a CD but will most likely fade out of the limelight after that. Look at all the runner-ups from season’s past. All release a CD which does moderately well but either do not release a sophomore album or release more albums that do not generate much steam.

I agree. I liked her voice at first, but then it became grating. And the dancing…..oh the dancing. Maybe she should try out for So You Think You Can Dance.

All in all though, I loved the finale. Awesome music overall.

  • Beth: Don't forget all the craziness with the governor having the affair with the woman in South America... South Carolina does have a very few nice bits,
  • heath: Oh Tommy...your comments mirror those of the Dawg as well. They thought Lee's voice was too big for the song. I don't think it was too big, but I can
  • Tommy Marx: Gotta disagree with you on this one sweetie. Yes, Crystal and Siobhan were definitely the best of the women, and while I didn't like the song he sang,
