American Idol 2009 – Top 3

Posted by: heath In: American Idol| Television

SanjayaIt’s so close I can almost taste it! But what an absolutely bizarre night of American Idol we had…..I think all of the judges were on crack.

This is reunion week – the contestants are flown home to get parades, keys to the city, and all sorts of love festyness. This is also the week then the judges send them a text message with the song that’s been chosen for them to sing – the Judges Choice.

Danny kicked off the night with Paula’s choice – Terrance Trent Darby’s Dance Little Sister. No idea why she picked this song, but it was awful. Danny looked completely uncomfortable as if he had given up. The scatting in the middle was horrendous, and he sounds the same as he does in every single song he sings. Way too chatty after the feedback – talking over Ryan while he was trying to give the numbers. Doesn’t matter since I won’t be voting for him.

Kris was up next with Kara/Randy’s choice of Apologize by One Republic. On the piano Kris found a sweet spot and did a good job. Some of the lyrics were hard to hear and Paula called out a “big bum note”, but I think he did fine. I didn’t care for the song though. The judges went completely nuts – with each other…it was as if the director went on a smoke break.

Adam was up next with Simon’s choice of One by U2. I loved his interpretation of the song, even though I don’t care for the song, but listening to him gave me chills. Simon was even seen clapping for Adam.

Next up the three guys were back with their own choices.

Danny – You Are So Beautiful. Yawn. Forgettable. Pitchy vocals. Too safe. Somehow though the judges raved and Simon called it a master class. Simon is officially deaf.

Kris – Heartless. Great interpretation, loved the acoustic performance, excellent job and the judges loved it.

Adam – Cryin‘ by Aerosmith (of course). Superb choice and performance, but please director turn the mic down on that awful backup singer! Simon went so far as to tell people to vote for Adam in not those exact words.

Overall the evening was great for Adam and Kris, and completely bizarre for the judges and their behaviour. Is America getting that desperate that we need the judges to act like they are on Jerry Springer?!

RESULTS: After performances from Jordin Sparks (who looks like she has aged about 10 years – in a good way), Katy Perry (she has some major Anime eyes), and some very poor stage direction with people coming in and out of camera when they shouldn’t have, we have our Top 2: Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.

I am planning to go to bed tonight feeling pleased, happy, and ready for the finale next week. I can’t wait for the excitement!!!

Simon, last night said to vote for the best singer. He said don’t expect someone will get in because you think they a “sure thing”. All voting matters. So vote.
He did not say vote for Adam.!

True – but I think the insinuation was “vote for Adam” ;-) .

I just found this article – looks like Simon is actually being accused of telling people to vote for Adam….

Can I get a hell damn yes?

I nearly opened a bottle of Champagne last night when the results were announced, but then I remembered I hadn’t chilled a bottle yet.

I’ll be doing that next week for the finale though – regardless of who wins because I like both of them.

Hi Heath!

I read my old post from the semifinals, and I thought it was hilarious that even then I had a big hate-on for Danny Go-Away-Key. To be honest, I think the guy paid a high price for being pimped throughout the season, from the auditions to this week’s show. I mean, seriously, his scream from hell last week was rewarded with an “A+ for effort”? WTF?

If he hadn’t been praised so early and so often, I wonder if he might have come out with a few good performances, instead of constantly coasting. Still, when Danny was voted off, I literally started crying, I was so happy. I thought the finale was preordained, when it was obvious to everyone but the judges that Kris had done far more throughout the season to earn the spot.

Yes, Kris massacred “All She Wants To Do Is Dance” and “Come Together,” but every other performance was either good or exceptional. “To Make You Feel My Love,” “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Falling Slowly” were all amazing, and his version of “Heartless” was far and away better than Kanye’s vocoded mess of a recording.

As for Adam, what can I possibly say that everyone doesn’t already know? He’s an amazing talent and made this season incredible.

I’m fine with either one of them winning. :-)

I’m glad to hear you cried from Happy tears when he left. I still think it’s sad that he made it so far beyond someone like Allison, whom I adored for so many reasons.

Kris has really become so endearing…….Adam just blows it away every time.

So like you, I will be happy regardless of who wins, because I think they will both be fine. However, I think that if Adam wins, Kris will have a harder time being as successful as Adam would be if Kris wins. ;-)
